Non-pharmacological cognitive enhancement

We have more and more proofs, that some things can increase cognitive performance in human. For example You probably could increase intelligence by music learning or computerized cognitive training with N-back game. But You can increase memory, processing speed or mood, if You only know, how to. In 2012 group of researchers has written a review of non-pharmacological cognitive enhancements (Dresler et al., 2012). Here is a list of things, You can use, to sharpen your brain.

  1. Some sort of food seems to be helpful for brain power. Food with proteins or polyphenols, like legumes, nuts, eggs and fish (Mediterranean diet) increase mind's capacity. Caffeine in coffee or tea has a strong, good effect on attention and memory and it is a desirable, daily drink.
  2. One of the strongest brain enhancer is physical activity. Running in combination with strength training or yoga are the best here. Active living gives the healthy body and healthy mind.
  3. You can take the best food and run regularly, but without a good sleep you are going nowhere. Mostly memory needs sleep, but any other brain ability wants it too.
  4. Mnemonics are old systems of increasing memory capacity. You can use them if You like to have a large knowledge, however they do not increase your brain power itself, but only give You a net, where you can put your knowledge bits.
  5. You can use the computer for brain training. With hard games, like those on Brain Scale, Your brain power could be built.
  6. Meditation is known for a very long time and today we have a strong proofs, that meditation increase cognitive performance. Meditation training lower stress and increase the emotional intelligence. Next week I am going to teach You, how to meditate and why.
