A straight answer, without the hype: what the research supports, what it doesn't, and how to set expectations before you start.
Short version: Dual N-Back reliably makes you better at Dual N-Back and at closely related working-memory tasks. Whether it transfers to broad abilities like fluid intelligence or IQ is genuinely disputed — the early positive result has been hard to reproduce under stricter conditions. It's a real, demanding mental workout; it is not a proven way to raise your IQ score.
In 2008, Jaeggi and colleagues published a study in which people who trained on Dual N-Back improved on tests of fluid intelligence — the ability to reason and solve novel problems — and the improvement scaled with how much they trained. That finding was striking because fluid intelligence had long been considered largely fixed in adulthood. It's the reason Dual N-Back became the brain-training task people talk about.
Follow-up work has been mixed. Several later studies and meta-analyses — for example work by Redick and colleagues, and reviews by Melby-Lervåg and Hulme — often found little or no transfer to general reasoning once the comparison was made against an active control group (people doing a different demanding task) rather than a group doing nothing. Effects in this literature tend to shrink as the study designs get stricter. Commonly cited reasons for the disagreement:
Near transfer. Training Dual N-Back improves your Dual N-Back score and your performance on tasks that closely resemble it — other n-back variants and short-term / working-memory span tasks. This part is not really in dispute. Working memory is trainable in the sense that you get measurably better at working-memory tasks.
What's contested is far transfer: whether that carries over to unrelated things like reading comprehension, problem-solving, or IQ. Treat any far transfer as a possible bonus, not the reason to train.
Contested. The 2008 result suggested gains in fluid intelligence that scaled with training; later, stricter studies often didn't reproduce it. Reliable: improvement on the task and similar working-memory measures. Disputed: transfer to general intelligence.
Your Dual N-Back score and performance on closely related working-memory and span tasks — "near transfer". "Far transfer" to unrelated abilities is where the research disagrees.
Your N usually starts moving in the first week or two. Studies that report broader effects use several weeks of near-daily 15–25 minute sessions. Anything beyond the task itself is gradual and modest.
If you want a hard, measurable, adaptive workout and treat transfer as a bonus — yes, and it's free. If you're specifically after an IQ increase, the evidence doesn't support that expectation.
