Demo only. In the game you press A or L when the square or the letter matches the one N steps back.

How it works

Position stream

A square lights up in a 3×3 grid, one step at a time.

Audio stream

At the same time, you hear a spoken letter.

Match decision

Signal when the position or letter matches the one from N steps back.

New to Dual N-Back? Start with the tutorial

Most N-Back tools drop you straight into a confusing grid. BrainScale doesn't. Our guided interactive tutorial walks you through your first session step by step, so the exercise clicks before you commit to a full round.

What is Dual N-Back?

Dual N-Back is a working-memory exercise developed for cognitive-science research. You track two streams at once — the position of a square and a spoken letter — and decide, each turn, whether the current item matches the one from N steps earlier. As you improve, N grows, and so does the demand on your working memory and attention.

How the exercise works

  • Each turn shows a grid position and plays a letter
  • You respond when either matches the item from N turns ago
  • "Dual" means you track both streams simultaneously
  • N increases as your accuracy improves, and drops if it falls
  • Sessions are short — a few focused minutes a day is the point

Why train with Dual N-Back?

  • Directly loads working memory, the system you use to hold and juggle information
  • Research has linked N-Back practice to gains in fluid intelligence
  • Builds sustained attention and resistance to distraction
  • Adapts to your level automatically, so it stays challenging

Regular short sessions beat occasional long ones — consistency is what moves N.

The research behind it

Dual N-Back became widely known after studies suggested that training on it could transfer to fluid intelligence — the ability to reason and solve novel problems. The findings are debated, but the task remains one of the most studied working-memory exercises, and it's a genuinely demanding, measurable way to work your attention.

Who it's for
